R Meadow Substack Highlights #4
Writers are readers first. R Meadow Substack Highlights
Writers are readers first. We may relate to specific words or topics, but judge content by whether it lives up to what caught the eye. R Meadow Highlights was launched to highlight word seed treasures worth exploring and a second read. Each highlight here grabbed attention and then resonated in some way. I hope you find new favorites to follow, like, or subscribe to through these highlights!
R Meadow Substack Highlights #4
This week’s highlighted Substack writer is Rob at The Old Grey Thinker.
I believe I first read this Substack writer in October. If you follow my notes, you’ve seen him restacked daily. Yes, I think he is that good. I am guaranteed to have a takeaway, insight, laugh, or a resounding Yep - that sums it up. Some brought a lump to the throat and a tear. It might be his perspective, calling a duck a duck, a call to take it or leave it, or a call to action to stop thinking about it and do it. Either way, I never leave empty-handed, only with agreement or food for thought.
His welcome email sums it up:
“Welcome to The Old Grey Thinker. Thanks for subscribing. I’m 67, allegedly retired, and still waiting for the promised carriage clock. Instead of golf, I decided to wrestle with technology, philosophy, and the small absurdities of modern life. What started as scribbles over tea has turned into The Old Grey Thinker — a place where “the greys” can laugh, argue, and make sense of being smart, stubborn, and not ready for the scrapheap.”
Grab a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, and enjoy reading Substack writer Rob at The Old Grey Thinker. Whether it is a comment, reply, restack, or Newsletter post, Rob offers perspective about living life after retirement and a fresh no nonsense way of looking at things in general. For those who believe we retire from work, not life - this one’s for you.
“I don’t write to motivate you.
Or fix you.
Or sell you a shiny second act.I write to name things honestly — especially the parts that don’t fit neatly into success stories.
To think out loud about ageing, visibility, curiosity, purpose, and how to build something meaningful without pretending we’re starting from scratch.”
“Yesterday I sat across from my wife of forty-one years at our kitchen table. Steam rose from fresh tea as the winter sun cut low through the window. I told her things I should have said decades ago – about fears I’d hidden, moments I’d felt lost, gratitudes I’d swallowed instead of expressed.”
