Lighting the Candle by R Meadow – December 30, 2025
It is natural to look back as the new year approaches and ask if the glass was half full or half empty. We wonder if our candle was bright or dimly lit. The answers are in the details and rarely one or the other. Like lighting the candle and watching the flame grow, each question prompts another.
Life this year was the same as every year, with its finest and worst days. For each challenge met, another came to take its place. For each success or failure, another came to be repeated or avoided. For each candle lit, two more showed up. Common sense returned. Those who loved nonsense continued to speak nonsense; no need to be surprised.
Old paths pushed aside for new ones. The tasks changed, but things still needed to be done. The country called for change and the need to look beyond the noise to find simple truths. Truth in the details.
You won’t find your truth or details here. My details are not yours, and yours are not mine. Starting the blog and then Substack. Scary first steps for a writer who has written for years. Dropping seeds and letting them grow where they may. One never knows if they will take root and grow or wither under the winds of change.

As one year ends and a new one begins, simple truths remain. Plants, flowers, and trees need good seeds to grow. Your light cannot shine if the candle is not lit. In our efforts to be a light in this sometimes dark world, we often forget. We are not the ones lighting the candle.
“For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” (King James Version, Psalm 18:28).
